The University of Waikato is inviting applications for doctoral scholarships. The doctoral scholarships are worth $22,000 a year, plus fees. They cover three years’ full-time study and are open to applications for international and domestic students. Application should be submitted till 31st July 2013.

Study Subject(s): Scholarships are provided to study within the Environmental Research Institute (seeking applicants intending to undertake research under the following themes: terrestrial ecosystems, freshwater ecosystems, coastal marine ecosystems, and Antarctic ecosystems.), Institute for Business Research (seeking applicants intending to investigate the potential for the small business sector to contribute a sustainable increase to New Zealand’s national income), National Institute of Demographic and Economic Analysis (seeking applicants intending to undertake research under their Maori and Indigenous Futures Programme and which addresses the opportunities and challenges attendant with Maori and indigenous demographic change.), Institute of Professional Learning (seeks applications from those intending to conduct research that will investigate and contribute to improved professional learning and development in early childhood centres, kura and schools in New Zealand.), Te Kotahi Research Institute (Applicants must show a link to at least one of the following themes; Economic Development and Intergenerational Sustainability, Environmental and Iwi Wellbeing, Solving Complex Social Challenges, Language and Cultural Identity, Leadership,Kaitiakitanga, Rangatiratanga) and Wilf Malcolm Institute of Educational Research.

Eligibility:

  • Wilf Malcolm Institute of Educational Research (WMIER): Applicants must demonstrate an alignment between their intended research and the Institute’s research priorities. For 2013, the WMIER is seeking applicants to investigate the following research question: How key competencies, as set out in the NZ curriculum, are fostered, evidenced and tracked over time, places and tasks in early years and compulsory schooling.
  • Te Kotahi Research Institute (TKRI): Applicants must demonstrate an alignment between their intended research and the Institute’s research priorities. For 2013 TKRI is seeking applicants intending to undertake research that contributes to the realization of Maori aspirations. Applicants must show a link to at least one of the following themes; Economic Development and Intergenerational Sustainability, Environmental and Iwi Wellbeing, Solving Complex Social Challenges, Language and Cultural Identity, Leadership, Kaiti a kitanga, Rangatiratanga.
  • Institute of Professional Learning: Applicants must demonstrate an alignment between their intended research and the Institute’s research priorities. For 2013 the Institute of Professional Learning seeks applications from those intending to conduct research that will investigate and contribute to improve professional learning and development in early childhood centers, kura and schools in New Zealand.
  • National Institute of Demographic and Economic Analysis (NIDEA): Applicants must demonstrate an alignment between their intended research and the Institute’s research priorities. For 2013 the NIDEA is seeking applicants intending to undertake research under their Maori and Indigenous Futures Programme and which addresses the opportunities and challenges attendant with Maori and indigenous demographic change.
  • Institute for Business Research (IBR): Applicants must demonstrate an alignment between their intended research and the Institute’s research priorities. For 2013, the IBR is seeking applicants intending to investigate the potential for the small business sector to contribute a sustainable increase to New Zealand’s national income.
  • Environmental Research Institute (ERI): Applicants must demonstrate an alignment between their intended research and the Institute’s research priorities. For 2013 the ERI is seeking applicants intending to undertake research under the following themes: terrestrial ecosystems, freshwater ecosystems, coastal marine ecosystems, and Antarctic ecosystems.
  • The offer of a University of Waikato Doctoral Scholarship may only be taken up by candidates who have formally completed the entry qualifications for, and then enroll in, doctoral studies at the University of Waikato.

Scholarship Description: The University of Waikato has six flagship Research Institutes which are offering doctoral scholarships. They have funded programmes which span the length of the research pipeline from discovery to application and commercialization.  Sustainability in all its forms – environmental, economic, social and cultural – is a strong emerging theme across the Institutes.

  • Environmental Research Institute (ERI) Scholarships: ERI researchers investigate environmental issues across a range of ecosystems to support effective environmental outcomes.
  • Institute for Business Research (IBR) Scholarships: IBR researchers study aspects of business and leadership to enhance New Zealand’s economic, social and cultural development.
  • National Institute of Demographic and Economic Analysis (NIDEA) Scholarships: NIDEA has a virtual and evolving community of national and international researchers who study and help inform policy responses to the demographic, social and economic processes that interact to shape New Zealand’s future.
  • Institute of Professional Learning (IPL) Scholarships: IPL provides professional learning and development in the broad field of education, and works in partnership with iwi and other education providers to deliver professional development programmes both nationally and internationally.
  • Te Kotahi Research Institute (TKRI) Scholarships: TKRI works with iwi, drawing on matauranga Maori and multi-disciplines to create new knowledge and innovation that will lead to the wellbeing of whanau and society.
  • Wilf Malcolm Institute of Educational Research (WMIER) Scholarships: WMIER research covers the broad field of education, from early childhood through to the tertiary sector; focusing on learning, teaching, curriculum, cultural and literacy issues and education policy.
